Real vs nominal: what the calculator answers

Nominal is the number on the account statement. Real purchasing power is what that number can buy, which drifts as prices rise. An inflation calculator maps an amount from one year to an equivalent in another year using a consumer price index (or equivalent methodology baked into the tool).

Use it for savings targets, salary conversations, indexed rent clauses, and a sanity check on whether returns beat inflation. Open the inflation and indexation calculator and plug in your own figures.

Inflation vs indexation in plain language

Inflation is the economy-wide pressure of rising prices. Indexation is how contracts catch up—rent, maintenance payments, or wages tied to an index. The calculator shows the scale of “what today’s number would need to be” to match a past amount.

Legal formulas in a specific contract always beat a website tool; treat results as planning guidance, not legal advice.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the amount in BGN (or the currency the tool supports).
  2. Pick a base year—when the amount mattered (e.g. an old salary or purchase year).
  3. Pick a target year—often the current year or the year of an upcoming renewal.
  4. Read the equivalent value and percentage change; compare with your actual basket (food, transport, housing).

What the calculator is not

  • Not a replacement for official tax, court, or payroll tables.
  • Not a perfect model of your personal basket (promotions, quality changes, and shrinkflation differ from the index).
  • Not a forecast of future inflation unless a scenario mode explicitly says so.
