What does the VAT calculator calculate?
The VAT calculator is an online tool that calculates value added tax (VAT) for goods and services in Bulgaria. The calculator works with the standard rate of 20%, which applies to most goods and services, as well as reduced rates of 9% (for hospitality) and 0% (for exports). The tool allows you to quickly convert amounts with VAT to amounts without VAT and vice versa, calculate the exact tax amount, and get a detailed breakdown of calculations. This is especially useful for entrepreneurs, accountants, merchants, and anyone working with financial operations where accurate VAT calculation is needed for invoicing, reporting, or expense planning.
How to use the VAT calculator?
Using the VAT calculator is very simple and intuitive. Follow these steps:
- Enter the amount: Enter the amount in BGN in the corresponding field of the calculator.

- Select rate: Choose the VAT rate - 20% (standard), 9% (reduced) or 0% (zero).

Example with specific numbers
Example 1: Calculating VAT from an amount without VAT
If you want to calculate how much VAT you need to add to a product worth 1,000 BGN without VAT:
- Amount without VAT: 1,000 BGN
- VAT rate: 20%
- VAT amount: 200 BGN (1,000 × 0.20)
- Total amount with VAT: 1,200 BGN (1,000 + 200)
Example 2: Extracting VAT from an amount with VAT
If you have an invoice worth 1,200 BGN with VAT and want to find out how much the amount is without VAT:
- Amount with VAT: 1,200 BGN
- VAT rate: 20%
- Amount without VAT: 1,000 BGN (1,200 ÷ 1.20)
- VAT amount: 200 BGN (1,200 - 1,000)
Sources and notes
The VAT calculator uses the official value added tax rates established in the Value Added Tax Act (VAT Act) of the Republic of Bulgaria. The standard rate of 20% applies to most goods and services, including electronics, clothing, restaurant services, construction services, consulting services, and others. The reduced rate of 9% applies to hospitality and restaurant services for accommodation, and the zero rate (0%) - for exports and certain specific operations.
All calculations are made according to the current legislation for 2025. For specific cases or complex operations, we recommend consulting with an accountant or tax consultant.

VAT calculator — FAQ
Accordion answers for quick reading; same Q&A is in the FAQ structured data for search engines.
Multiply the tax base (price without VAT) by the rate as a decimal: for 20%, base × 0.20. Amount with VAT = base + VAT, or directly base × 1.20. For 9%, use × 0.09 and × 1.09. The calculator performs the same steps and shows a breakdown.
