Methodology
- Sick leave — indicative days and benefit
How sick-leave pay is split
For temporary incapacity after 31 Dec 2023, the employer pays the first two working days at 70% of average daily gross for that month. From the third working day, NSSI pays 80% of average daily insurable income over the prior 18 months (90% for work accident / occupational disease).
This tool is an estimate: it counts working days from your dates (Mon–Fri and Bulgarian public holidays), splits employer vs NSSI, and lists assumptions. It does not replace a medical certificate or an NSSI order.
Examples with assumptions
- Short new leave (5 working days), steady income. Assumption: standard five-day week; employer pays 2 days × 70% of gross ÷ month working days; NSSI — 3 days × 80% of an approximated daily base. Indicative only.
- Continuation without a break. Assumption: no new employer days; all working days on this certificate use the NSSI rate.
- Period spanning two months with a public holiday. Assumption: weekends and official holidays excluded automatically; employer daily rate still uses the start month.
Limitations
We do not model hourly summed-time or shift schedules; override the day count manually. We do not load your official 18-month insurance file. We do not claim accountant or NSSI approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who pays the first days of sick leave?
For incapacity starting after 31 Dec 2023, the employer pays the first two working days at 70% of the average daily gross for that month (Social Security Code art. 40(5)). From the third working day, NSSI pays.
Working days or calendar days?
For standard daily schedules, benefits are paid for working days in the incapacity period — not every calendar day. This tool counts Mon–Fri minus Bulgarian public holidays; correct manually for shifts.
What is a continuation of sick leave?
If incapacity continues without a break after the first two working days (new certificate or extension), the employer usually does not pay those two days again — NSSI covers from the first working day of the continuation.
Why might the amount differ from my payslip?
NSSI uses an 18-month average daily insurable income, a possible average daily net cap for general disease, your schedule and medical certificates. One current salary is only a rough guide, not an exact NSSI figure.
When is the benefit paid?
Under NSSI rules the cash benefit is due from the first day of incapacity until recovery or disability is established (with separate limits after some fixed-term contracts end). The bank transfer date depends on submitted documents and processing — this calculator does not predict a payout date.
What percentage does NSSI pay, and is tenure required?
General disease: 80% of average daily insurable income over 18 months; work accident / occupational disease: 90% (art. 41). General disease also needs at least 6 months OZM insurance (not under 18 or for work accidents).
Is the result official?
No. It is an estimate. NSSI sets the final amount from your insurance file. Source: НОИ — Парично обезщетение при временна неработоспособност (checked 2026-09-10).
